18 JULY – Doco Screening: Lionel
In 1968 a young aboriginal boxer with a charming smile punched his way to history when he stopped Fighting Harada in Japan over fifteen rounds. His name was Lionel Rose and he became the undisputed world bantamweight champion.
MAYSAR and Yarra City Council are delighted to screen LIONEL on Opening Night of the Gertrude Street Projection Festival. MAYSAR (Melbourne Aboriginal Youth Sport and Recreation) is a local organisation that has been a significant part of the Aboriginal community for many years. Below ground at MAYSAR is a boxing gym formally known as the Fitzroy Stars Gym where Lionel Rose would visit frequently. The board and staff of MAYSAR are delighted to welcome you in to this very special place.
Open on the night will be the Foyer (Ground Level) & Boxing Gym (Basement).
