Place of Longing is a contemplative video-painting that expresses yearning for a time of lost innocence, while simultaneously acknowledging that it is an ideal that exists in the imagination. This inexplicable mixture of longing and acceptance is best described by the Portuguese term ‘saudade’.

Place of Longing creates Hudson’s imagined place along with the sad ambivalence that comes from the knowledge that it fades over time. By drawing inspiration from arcadian landscape painting,  The work seeks to evoke a nostalgic and tragic avenue back to that naïve romantic state yet the illusion of sanctuary collapses and fades over time, revealing its fiction and becoming a metaphor for yet another small loss of innocence.

Misshapen dreamers inhabit the work. Wandering in a state of uncertainty, they search for mystery and meaning in their place.

Brianna Hudson is an emerging Tasmanian artist currently working in Melbourne. With a penchant for magic realism and visual storytelling she uses her multidisciplinary art practice to create a portal back to a time of lost innocence. Focusing on experimental stop-motion animation, Hudson completed her BFA with the University of Tasmania in 2012 and continues to be a part of various exhibitions both in Melbourne and nationally.
