Atherton Gardens is Aboriginal land and is now home to many South Sudanese people. Through his project Inner Beat, artist Ez Eldin Deng has been working extensively with cohealth Arts Generator on a series of collaborations that explore African Australian identity, “As Africans we share a similar pride with Indigenous Australians for our motherland, ours stories and our kinship. We two peoples understand the struggle to have the same opportunities as other Australians.”
Ez Eldin Deng was born in South Sudan. In 2004 he arrived in Australia with his family. Driven by his desire to communicate Ez Eldin was determined to learn English as quickly as possible. Since then he has focused on his natural ability to tell stories through rhymes, theatre, film and storytelling. He continues to build his networks within African and other multicultural communities to create powerful and compelling stories. This year Ez Eldin is working extensively with cohealth Arts Generator on a series of collaborations that explore African Australian identity.
cohealth Arts Generator is a unique participatory arts program based in Footscray. Part of Australia’s largest community health organization, cohealth Arts Generator is an awarding winning program that is driven by an unflinching commitment to supporting vulnerable communities to access, make and participate in great art that enriches daily life and increases the wellbeing of all. Liss Gabb provides the artistic leadership for cohealth Arts Generator and is creative producer for Inner Beat. Liss has over 20 years experience as an artist, curator and creative producer of collaborative projects with a wide range of communities. Liss is currently completing a Master of Arts (Art in Public Space) at RMIT.
