Kate Brown – Howling City
Event Title: Howling City
Artist: Kate Brown
Site Number: 37
Site Location: Little Woods Gallery, 1 Langridge St, Collingwood
Date: Saturday 23 July, 6-8pm
Howling City is a sound performance incorporating experimental vocal techniques, exploring the capacities and limits of the body. Utilising the body and voice to navigate site and explore the notion of singing cities, Kate’s performance utilises physical movement derived from body weather techniques, intertwined with vocalisations that strip the city bare.
Kate Brown is an Australian based artist and musician who is a current Masters candidate at Sydney College of the Arts, Australia. Kate’s focus is situated in experimental voice practice and performance where she analyses the functions and structures of the body/object to explore ways of remapping space and time.
These working methods help to explore ideas of the body’s relationship, potential and extension in an environment outside of itself. Kate’s practice has transformed from a video and sculptural based practice into one that incorporates contemporary performance methods, experimental vocal techniques, sound and theatre, to access ways in which the body in performance can discover new ways of deciphering and transforming an environment.
Kate Brown has studied a Bachelor of Visual Arts Honours at Sydney College of the Arts. She is now a Masters of Fine Arts Candidate at SCA and has exhibited/performed at NEAF, Gaffa Gallery, Firstdraft gallery, Sydney Non Objective Gallery, Factory 49, 107 Project Space, Intersect Arts, airspace and Art Beat to name a few.
She has been in residence at PACT Centre for Emerging Artists, Bundanon Trust, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Anyplace Project Space, Artist@work Albury Art Gallery and The Lockup Cultural Centre Newcastle.
